Lower Shore Land Trust Native Plant Sale Closes April 28th

SNOW HILL – The Lower Shore Land Trust announces LAST CALL for purchases for its 17th Annual Native Plant Sale, which closes on April 28th. Proceeds to benefit Lower Shore Land Trust. Preorder until April 28 and pick up on May 3 and 4.

If you’ve heard the buzz but not yet given native plants a try, here is a cheat sheet to help you decide. Green thumb not required:

• Something Small – Sherwood Purple phlox. Don’t confuse this with common Thrift. This woodland native can take half day sun. The flower stalk blooms 8” tall and lasts for many weeks in early spring/summer.
• Something Shady -- Columbine are dainty, cheerful garden fillers. Shaped like small bells in the early spring garden – “Corbett” variety is butter yellow or “Little Lanterns” blooms tri-colored with red/cream and yellow tones. Native species provide pollen for early bees seeking nectar. The same for Tiarella, common name Foamflower or Heuchera, common name Coral Bells. Both are great shade foliage fillers wonderfully mixed with your garden hostas or ferns.
• Something Dry -- Try the stunning Great Coneflower, Rudbeckia maxima. The blue-gray foliage is unique and the tall yellow flower with green seed head will be summer showstoppers, inviting a wealth of native bees and butterflies and providing seeds for birds in winter.
• Something Deer Resistant -- Carex stricta. This is one of many sedge species which can tolerate wet feet and adds a graceful texture to your garden border. A great replacement where grass struggles under a heavy tree canopy.
• Want Berries? Red or Black Chokeberry – A single shrub can be an accent to the perennial bed. Spring white flowers load this native shrub/small tree. Your winter birding just got more interesting when red or black fruits arrive.
• Bee Magnet – Penstemon digitalis Beardtongue – This is one rugged perennial; it tolerates wet, full sun/part shade and drought once established. Bees and hummingbirds gravitate to the pink/white tube-shaped flower. A staff favorite is Penstemon small with white throat and lavender flower. The near evergreen foliage is a bonus garden filler.
